Augusta Christian Takes Down Johnson in Opener

Augusta Christian kicked off its season Thursday with a 28-21 win over Johnson (Savannah) at Lions Memorial Field in North Augusta.
The Lions, who led 28-7 in the fourth quarter before surrendering two scores down the stretch, were led by a varied cast of playmakers:
Zack Blackwell - Senior Running Back and Linebacker
21 rushes for 77 yards and 2 touchdowns; 1 reception for 17 yards
2 tackles, 2 tackles for loss and 1 sack
Jeb Bradford - Junior Quarterback
9-15 passing for 131 yards and 1 touchdown; 36 yards rushing and 1 touchdown
Mikeal Sullivan - Senior Wide Receiver
5 receptions for 72 yards and 1 touchdown
Luke Wilson - 6’8” Junior Defensive End
1 sack, 1 tipped pass, 2 hurries and 1 tackle
Adam Bussey - Senior Athlete
1 interception, 1 recovered fumble, 32 all purpose yards
Interceptions - Nathaniel Willis, Grayson Brooker, Garrett Hamm
Wesley Michaelson - Sophomore - 4 tackles
Christian Greene - Senior Tight End - 2 receptions for 27 yards
Second year head coach Andy Stickel helped “restore the roar” at AC last season when he led AC to a 9-2 record and a semifinal finish in the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) class 3A playoffs. Before Stickel took over, the team had only won 20 games in the previous 7 seasons after being crowned state champion in 2012. Stickel spoke after the game (top of post) about the team’s mindset, its balanced offensive attack and more.
Augusta Christian will return to Lions Memorial Field next Friday to take on Fox Creek in a game that will be televised on MeTV at 7:30 P.M.
